Initial Concept Document

Below is my original concept document I posted on Reddit for feedback. Based on the feedback received, I have begun fleshing it out more. Once I finish I'll post here as well. In the meantime, any comments or suggestions are welcome.

The basis is to provide a fun, action/adventure game for players to while away time. This will be accomplished through the use of a familiar theme (saving a kidnapped princess from an evil doer) by an unassuming hero embarking on a quest to do so. Along the way the hero has to overcome several obstacles that challenge his abilities.

The game will involve solving puzzles (e.g. how to cross a river, or climb a mountain), navigating terrain (e.g. jumping between platforms, swinging from "ropes", climbing), as well as fighting enemies and collecting various rewards. The rewards will allow the player character to increase his abilities.

The game is a side-scroller so the camera will allow the player to see slightly ahead of where the character is to gain a glimpse of upcoming things, but not enough to reveal the full extent of the game world.

The game will be geared primarily toward people who enjoy playing games casually to kill some time, or take a break from their activities. The primary age range would be 18+. Given the early age when using a PC, the game could be easy enough for a child (8-12 years) to play yet challenging enough for teens and adults. The younger audience may not be able to solve all the puzzles, but that may also create a learning environment for them.

The game will be developed using Unity for initial release as a PC game. Unity will allow me to build the game for other platforms (HTML, iOS, and Android). When building for the other platforms there may be some minor changes needed in order to meet the device requirements. Generally speaking the development will be done using settings which will minimize the effort and time to build for other platforms.

The game will start with the player character being "chosen" to go on a quest to save the princess and thus the kingdom. The character will progress over various types of terrains which will offer challenges to be met to advance. The player will also be provide the opportunity to collect bonus objects which will be used to purchase items as well as enhance their abilities. The game's finale will be confrontation with the evil warlord in his keep. Defeat of the warlord will enable the player character to free the princess and return her to her father. The hero's mentor, the Wizard, will appear periodically providing guidance to the hero.
